The DevOps section collects hands-on experience from the Sudo infrastructure team running hundreds of PHP/Laravel websites: the three-tier Cloud VPS model, the move to Kubernetes and CI/CD, real incidents and how they ...
When you need to build or rebuild a whole batch of Cloud VPS instances (balancers, minions, databases, operations hosts), installing the operating system by hand on each one is slow and hard to keep c...
As you pack websites more tightly onto each Kubernetes node, you will need a resource buffer: headroom so that one site suddenly bloating its RAM does not push the whole node into memory pressure, or...
A CI pipeline goes weeks without a single changed line, then suddenly fails at the step that uses git over SSH with the message OpenSSL version mismatch. Whoever picks it up usually starts trying thin...
When a cluster runs dozens to hundreds of websites, a backup pipeline that processes sites one by one no longer makes sense: every site has to compress its web directory, dump its database and push to...
Moving one website from a VPS to Kubernetes is not hard. Moving dozens of websites without interrupting any of them takes a process. This document describes a process for migrating websites from VPS t...
The simplest way to attach website data to a pod is to declare an NFS volume directly in the Deployment: one server line, one path line, and you are done. That works, but there is nowhere to put mount...
A very common configuration change on Kubernetes: changing dbHost in the values of a batch of sites, for example when moving the database from an in-cluster MySQL StatefulSet to a dedicated MySQL VPS....
The fastest way to get a database for websites on a cluster is to run MySQL right inside it: a StatefulSet, data on Block Storage, websites connecting through internal DNS. But after running it for a...
In a GitOps setup, the pipeline that creates a website on Kubernetes usually ends with one step: commit the new site's values file to the Helm repo, then git push. When several pipelines run at once,...
A website returning 502 can be failing because of nginx on the balancer, PHP-FPM on the minion, a query locking a table on the database, or, on Kubernetes, a pod that was just killed for exceeding its...
Once one product runs well on Helm, other Laravel projects want to move to Kubernetes too. Copying the chart and editing it by hand is the fastest way, but it produces many near-identical copies that...
Open Cloud Manager, click through creating a cluster, create an NFS machine, then SSH in to install the rest: doing it once is quick, doing it a second time is where mistakes start. This document show...
